Quit Playing by Right-Handed Rules

Being left-handed has always been somewhat problematic when it comes to purchasing certain things. Let’s face it, it’s a right-hand dominant world, and the majority of goods are catered to right-handed individuals, including PC accessories like the keyboard and mouse. As if the years of persecution for being left-handed weren’t bad enough, lefties have been all but forced to use computers as if they were right-handed, due to a simple lack of available left-handed products.

Now for some things this wouldn’t necessarily be so bad. After all, most people, lefty or righty, are at least ambidextrous enough to be able to casually surf the internet with either hand, even if they’re not quite as precise utilizing the mouse with one as opposed to the other. It also doesn’t hurt that lefties are recognized for being far more ambidextrous than righties on average.

If you’re a left-handed PC gamer though, things aren’t quite as peachy. Leisurely surfing the web is one thing, but playing intense first-person shooters, where quick and precise movements are a must for survival, is quite another. Despite the fact that estimates place the global population of lefties at just over 10%, there are very few mice dedicated to left-handed players. The best that most lefties have been able to do up until now is find a mouse that is fit for left or right, but really catered to neither. That or try their luck right-handed.

On the other hand, it’s not just the poor lefties who are stuck using a right-handed mouse, even some righties would rather make use of their left hand to control the mouse, freeing up their dominant hand for use on the numpad/arrow keys/keyboard. Using the numpad with one’s dominant hand is especially important for anyone doing repeated data entry work involving numbers. So there’s definitely a potentially large segment of the population out there that could make use of a left-handed mouse. The question is, where are they (the mice, not the people)?

So What’s A Southpaw (Or A Righty Who Wants to Act Like A Lefty) To Do?

As mentioned, many mice are now designed with at least some attention paid to lefties. They are easier to use with either hand, with equally spaced and sized buttons, though the buttons are still reversed for lefties, with the forefinger and middle finger having to function opposite of how they would were it being used by a righty. This is usually adjustable in the options menu for the mouse though, so it can be configured either way. Thankfully we are also finally seeing a first real wave of quality left-handed mice as well, designed specifically to fit in the hand of a left-handed user, offering them unmatched control and comfort.

It may seem like a little thing to many people, but if you’re simply not comfortable or not able to use a mouse with your right hand, there’s no reason to continue doing so any longer. Quit playing by others’ rules, and play or surf the way you were meant to, left hand proudly dictating your action.
